Bits 'n Pieces Favorite Threads for Your Longarm

Any quilter can tell you, your thread can make or break your project.

Longarm quilting requires thread that can withstand the rigors of high-speed stitching. Things like thread breakages, tension problems, uneven stitches, all those things can stop your project before you even get started. Our favorite thread for long arming are Glide from Fil-Tec and So Fine from Superior Threads.

Glide

Glide is a trilobal polyester filament thread. It has a brilliant sheen with the look of Rayon. It’s virtually lint-free with excellent wash-fastness.

So Fine

So Fine is a lint-free, matte-finish, smooth 50 weight, 3 filament polyester thread. Due to its fine nature, So Fine is an excellent blending thread and loved by both longarm and home machine quilters. So Fine also works well as a bobbin thread.

Pre-Wound Bobbins

Pre-wound bobbins are one of the best kept secrets for longarm quilting thread. Since they come ready to use, they’re real time savers allowing you to spend more time on your quilting and less time worrying about who’s going to win thread chicken. As a bonus, pre-wound bobbins are wound by machine, leading to more consistent tension in your stitches and a smoother quilting experience. We have several different types of pre-wound bobbins at Bits and Pieces, but our favorites for your longarm are the Decobobs from Wonderfil, the Magna-Glide bobbins from Fil-Tec, and the Super Bob’s from Superior Threads.

Decobobs

Decobobs are wound in a reusable plastic bobbin, which means there is no glue or wax holding it together meaning you can  keep your machine clean and happy! The 80 weight thread’s finer weight minimizes the bulk but still keeps the strength, versatility, and reliability you need for your quilts

Magna-Glide Pre-Wound Bobbins

Magna-Glide pre-wound bobbins have a patented magnetic core to give uniform tension throughout the entire bobbin.

Super Bob’s

Super Bobs Poly prewound bobbins are available in three styles: Class 15, L-style, and M-style. We love prewound bobbins for their convenience and ability to hold more thread than a self-wound bobbin.
