One of the questions we get asked a lot at Bits ‘n Pieces is about the different ways to label your quilt. Everyone from beginner quilters to the quilt guild queens has an opinion on ‘the right way’ to label their quilt. And our version of the right way is the way that works best for you!
Why Add Labels to Quilts?
Quilt labels are more than just decorative additions. A quilt label has the ability to tell more about the story of your quilt, marking who made it, when and why it was created, and any special occasions or dedications tied to it. Whether you're gifting a quilt, showcasing it in an exhibit, or simply preserving its history, a thoughtful label can keep that record with your quilt.
Labels are invaluable for quilt appraisals, adding provenance that can enhance the value of the quilt. Moreover, they ensure credit is given where it’s due, especially in collaborative projects or group challenges.
Ideas for Different Types of Labels
- Handwritten Labels: Use permanent fabric pens to write directly onto a fabric label or the backing. Make sure to include your name, the date, and the occasion on your label.
- Embroidered Labels: If writing on your quilt isn’t your style, try embroidering the information for your label. You can use a simple stem stitch and embroidery floss if you want to do hand embroidery or embroider it with an embroidery machine.
- Printed Labels: Did you know you could design labels on your computer and print them onto fabric sheets your inkjet printer? It’s so easy! You can even print special photos or pictures or mementos onto it.
- Pre-Made Labels: We always try to keep bolts of quilt label panels in the shop. They’re great to have on hand to add and can be quickly customized with fabric markers or embroidery without having to start from scratch.
- Pieced-In Labels: If you plan far enough ahead, you can sew the label directly into the quilt backing as part of the design. This option ensures the label is permanent and difficult to remove.
Adding labels to your quilts is an essential finishing step and adds a personal touch. It can be as simple or as involved as you want it to be, but taking the time to add a label to your quilt is the perfect final flourish to your project.
