One Block Wonder Supply List - Instructor: Jackie O’Brien – Intermediate Skill Level

Option 1 - Yardage:  The amount of fabric required is 6 repeats of fabric for the blocks.  If you have a 24” repeat you would multiply 6 X 24’ which = 144”, divided by 36” = 4 yards for the blocks (but buy at least 4 ¼ yards to be safe & verify that you have 6 complete repeats).  If you are going to use the original fabric in the borders buy additional yardage. (I always buy 6 yards).
To find the repeat, lay the fabric in front of you with the fold line near you.  Find a design element which is easily identifiable near the fold, when it comes up again you have found the repeat.  The best fabrics for this process are large prints with little background.

Option 2 - Panels:  When using panels buy 7 panels, six are for the 6 repeats needed.  The
hexagons are designed around the 7th panel.

Optional Additional Fabrics:  If time allows, we may have time to explore Hollow Cubes or stars made with the Star 60 tool to add to the OBW.  Bring ½ yard of 3 fabrics in light, medium and dark values.  Outer borders, binding, half hexies and Half Rectangle Triangles: I buy 3 yards of a color that is in the Panel (often I choose a batik, Grunge or Kona).  An 8th can be used to cut out and applique’ design elements onto the OBW top.
Do Not Pre-Wash the Fabric!
Design Wall:  1 Twin batting OR 4 yards of flannel that can be cutting half and stitched into a square OR  2 flannel backed tablecloths that can be stitched together. You will design on your design fabric, pin your hexies to it and roll it up to take home to finish.

Basic Supplies:

• Flower Pins. These pins lay flat; flat enough for a ruler to be over them and the ruler will
still be flat against the fabric

• Measuring Tape to determine the width of the panel

• Small Safety pins - For a quilt using a 24” repeat you will need approximately 120 very
small light weight safety pins (about 170 if you are using a large panel).  Approximately
300 Straight pins for pinning rows together.
• Rotary Cutter: A 45 or 60  rotary cutter with a new blade.
• Cutting Mat:  A large & a smaller cutting mat combined can be used to obtain 44” of
cutting space.
• Rulers:  A 6” x 24” ruler for cutting the strips.  A 12” or 14” Ruler with two 60 degree lines.
I recommend the Studio 180 Design First Choice rulers to cut your equilateral triangles.
The Star 60 tool not only cuts your equilateral triangles in 17 sizes, but you can also make
Star 60, Striped 60, Capped 60, Checkerboard 60, Framed 60, Quad 60 & Hollow Cube 60
units. One 6” x 24” long for cutting the WOF Strips.
• Sewing Machine & cord, needles, thread, pins, scissors.
• Monopoly Thread for top stitching.
• Helpful: Strip Sticks or pressing bars are very helpful when pressing seams open.
• Paper Plates:  Non waxed paper plates are used to keep your strips and hexies organized
