Description

FOR ROSA is a tribute to Nancy's maternal great-grandmother, Rosa Reyes Wegis. Born October 12, 1878 to Don Rafael Reyes and Maria Ignacia Ortega, Rosa was one of ten children raised on a rancho near Reyes Creek in Ventura County, CA. In 1899 at the age of 21, she married a German immigrant named Gebhard Wegis. They established their own ranch in the Cuyama Valley of California where they raised five children in a one-room adobe with a dirt floor. Rosa had just celebrated her 70th birthday when she died Oct 14, 1948.Freda, the only daughter, was my grandmother who married, also had five children, and taught elementary school in Bakersfield, CA. The following account is from Cynthia Wegis Hudson (Nancy's second or third cousin) When my mother went into a nursing home I found a small baby pillowcase in her keepsakes, which included a note saying it had been made by Rosa from her wedding dress. It was a gift for my mother's first baby who had died. I remember my mother saying that Rosa was a "real lady." Kits will include patterns and all fabrics needed to complete the top and binding. The finished project is and approximately 90" x 90" quilt.
