Each quilter has different ways that they learn, different demands on their time, different needs for workshop or quilt class. There is no one-size-fits-all in quilting! Thankfully, we’re happy to offer in-person classes as well as virtual ones for everyone who wants to learn. But if you’ve never taken a virtual class or if you’ve never been to an in-person class with us, you might not know which is the best fit for you. We’ve put together our Guide to Virtual versus In-Person Quilt Classes to help.
Virtual Quilting Classes
Things have changed leaps and bounds in the past couple of years in what is possible for taking a quilt class virtually. You can learn from home, there’s no need to travel big distances to see the national quilting experts when you can stream them directly to you! And you can even take the classes in your pajamas if you want, we won’t tell. Since you’re sewing from your own sewing space, you can use your own machine and don’t have to worry about leaving something important behind. Virtual classes may also have more flexible scheduling options so you can watch live or replay recordings later at your convenience. They’re also great for connecting with quilters and friends that you wouldn’t normally find. Quilters from all over the world can show up for a virtual quilting class.
But a virtual quilt class isn’t the best fit for every situation. Sometimes when you’re in class, you get stuck or stumped or you can’t figure out what is going wrong. With a virtual class, it’s not hands on so there are fewer quick fixes. If you live with shaky internet or you’re not tech savvy, then a virtual class may not be best either. And stitching from home means that all the distractions are there waiting to derail your project.
In-Person Classes
Hands-on classes and workshops are a huge help when you’re learning to quilt or a new technique. Instructors are able to spot problems and correct techniques in real time. You don’t have to worry about anything else, no WiFi problems, no tech isssues, just show up to class and stitch. And since we just opened our newly renovated Stone Cottage Classroom across the parking lot from Bits ‘n Pieces, if you forget anything you can grab it from the shop. Depending on the class, an in-person class is also a great opportunity to try out Handi Quilter long arms or ProStitcher without having it buy it first. And there’s nothing like sewing alongside another quilter to keep you inspired!
However there’s a reason why virtual classes have become so popular. In-person classes are less flexible than virtual options. Classes run at set times, and you may have a schedule that prevents you from being able to participate. In addition, if it’s a multi-part class, missing a session often means catching up on your own. An in-person class often has limited spots available. For popular classes and national educators, classes may fill up and you might miss out.
Which One is Right for You?
Not every class is available in both formats, but when you have a choice this is what you should consider.
Choose Virtual If…
-
You have a busy schedule or prefer learning at your own pace.
-
Traveling to class isn’t practical for you.
-
You enjoy replaying lessons to perfect techniques.
Choose In-Person If…
-
You love hands-on help and real-time interaction.
-
You want to test machines, shop fabrics, and sew in a dedicated space without distractions.
-
You thrive in a social, creative environment.
